A Lasting Memorial That Helps Our Environment
In May 1999, the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home and Chapel, together with the Grand River Foundation, formally launched the Family Memorial Area and Memorial Trail program within the Rockwood Conservation Area.

Preserving Rockwood's Environment For Future Generations
Over 75,000 people visit Rockwood each year, but there was no well defined trail network within the park. Forty years of public use has resulted in the trampling of undergrowth that is required for regeneration of the park's magnificent forests. Completion of a more formal trail system will at once increase visitor enjoyment, and help preserve Rockwood's natural beauty for future generations.

The
Rockwood Conservation Area is located just off Hwy. 7 in its namesake
village, mid-way between Guelph and Acton. Its 79 hectares were
preserved as a public park in 1958 by what is now the Grand River
Conservation Authority. Rockwood is a scenic gem, renowned for its
natural beauty, featuring majestic vistas, forests, and the world's
largest concentration of rare glacial pothole formations.
Through a long term agreement with the Grand River
Foundation, the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home and Chapel will
directly contribute $50.00 on behalf of every funeral conducted. Each
contribution is a Memorial Footstep along the pathway to creation of the
Rockwood Memorial Trail. A permanent record of these donations, and the
people the commemorate, is kept in memorial kiosk in the family memorial
area at Rockwood Conservation Area.
The
focal point of the program is known as the Family Memorial Area. It is
situated away from the hustle and bustle of Rockwood Conservation Area's
main camping and say use areas. From the parking lot located at the
historic Harris Woolen Mill ruins, visitors cross the rustic bridge over
the Eramosa River, and pass the tumbling waters of the upper mill dam.
The setting is secluded and contemplative, and is the site of a Memorial
Service held each year in memory and tribute to departed loved ones.
